Hi folks,

The railroad (literally) to force major new taxes to finance a huge expansion of rail transit in Atlanta is gaining steam. In addition to rigging the project list that we get to vote on so that 53% of the money goes into rail projects (most of which aren’t fully funded), the effort has been given a major boost by Gov. Deal. He has appointed a Transit Governance Task Force and charged them with drafting legislation to form a new regional layer for transit governance that will have the power to force cities and municipalities to support and operate transit systems, regardless of whether the citizens want them or not.

The Transit Governance Task Force has already me several times – with little or no public notice. After much critical feedback, they have opened up the next meeting for public comment. It’s scheduled for Dec. 9 at 1:00PM in room 606 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building across the street from the Capitol. I would like to encourage everyone who opposes spending an additional $3.2 billion on rail projects to attend this meeting, then let Gov. Deal and the legislative leadership know how you feel.

NFFTEA is pleased to announce that we will host a Point / Counter-Point Debate on the proposed Constitutional Amendment Convention Legislation. Georgia Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers will join us for this Event and John Gruetter, an expert on the Constitution, will join us as both sides of this debate are presented. There has only been one other Constitutional Convention in our nation's history, so you'll want to join us to find out which side of this issue you'll be taking. We will meet at the Roswell Parks and Recreation Activities Building at 7:00pm on March 13, which is the SECOND Tuesday due to the Presidential Preferential Primary Election which will be held on the first Tuesday of March.
